Do You and Adam Driver Have Something In Common?

Oscar nominee Adam Driver cannot bear watching himself on screen.

Does it surprise you to hear that one of Hollywood’s hottest actors has a pronounced aversion to watching his own movie performances? This is his own words from 2015:

“Yeah, no, I’ve watched myself or listened to myself before, then always hate it... And then wish I could change it, but you can’t. And I think I have, like, a tendency to try to make things better or drive myself and the other people around me crazy with the things I wanted to change or I wish I could change.”

This is in particular reference to his performance in Marriage Story, the film that got him his Oscar nomination and to the song he sings at the end of the film, ‘Being Alive’ by Stephen Sondheim. It’s a fantastic scene which shows all his character’s humanity and vulnerability in one shot and one song.

He famously walked out of an interview recently when a clip of this song was played, prompting strong opinions both for and against his actions across the web. Do you think he overreacted, was he taking himself too seriously or was it a legitimate reaction to a situation he had a right to say no to?

It’s surprisingly comforting to know that even an experienced movie actor like Adam Driver doesn’t like watching himself on film. Let’s face it no-one likes seeing or hearing themselves on camera and at Studio Softbox, we are very aware of the vulnerability everyone can experience being in front of the camera too- we are actually intensely camera shy ourselves so we know exactly how you feel!

Of course the thought of sitting and staring down a camera can be very intimidating but don’t worry, we have some tricks up our sleeve that will really help get you comfortable and into your flow. We know it’s important to get your voice heard so that you can speak your truth and really tell the world what you are an expert in, what you truly care about and what are your unique offerings that will draw people to you.

So when we shoot interviews we don’t use scripts and we don’t ask you to talk into camera. All you need to do is sit down and have a chat with Jim, your filmmaker, and we will do the rest (and don’t worry we won’t ask you to sing!).

Before you know it you’ll have forgotten that the camera is there at all!

Why not get in touch and ask what else we can do to make sure you have the right content for your business.

In the meantime, spare a thought for poor old Mr. Driver!
